July 24, 2019 – Parents homecoming, Patansaongi, MH, India

Over the course of a couple of months, my parents embarked on a captivating journey through the United States, creating lasting memories and discovering the diverse beauty of the country. Their adventure took them to remarkable destinations such as the majestic Niagara Falls, where they marveled at the sheer power of nature’s masterpiece. They ventured to the enchanting Mackinac Island, enjoying the tranquil charm of its car-free streets and captivating views.

From there, they soaked in the sun and fun of Put-in-Bay, relishing the island’s laid-back atmosphere and vibrant entertainment. The vibrant city of Chicago dazzled them with its iconic skyline and cultural vibrancy, while the bustling streets of New York City unveiled a world of dreams and endless possibilities.

Their exploration continued to Hartford, where history and architecture intertwined, offering glimpses into the nation’s past. In Pittsburgh, they experienced the city’s transformation from an industrial hub to a hub of innovation and creativity. The grandeur of Washington D.C. left them in awe as they visited iconic landmarks and absorbed the nation’s rich political history.

Amidst their travels, they discovered the quaint charm of Frankenmuth, a picturesque Bavarian-style town that felt like a step into another world. Through all these destinations and more, my parents embraced the diverse tapestry of landscapes, cultures, and experiences that the United States has to offer. Their journey was a true testament to the spirit of exploration and the joy of discovering new places.

Below is the list of places that my parents explored during their USA visit in 2019:

I will gladly wait for their return journey to the US next time and explore more places with them.

Week 03 (January 15 – January 21) – MJ’s Running in 2023

Welcome to the third week of running of 2023.

This week’s running summary takes a slightly different turn, as life’s priorities shifted in a meaningful way. While the pavement remained untouched by running shoes, a significant journey was undertaken in a different realm. From January 15 to January 21, running miles took a backseat as I immersed myself in the responsibilities and festivities surrounding rituals and culture following my recent wedding.

Life’s most beautiful moments often demand our attention and time, and this week was no exception. The joyous occasion of a wedding brought together families, friends, and communities to celebrate the union of two individuals. With cultural rituals that hold deep significance, it was a time of togetherness, bonding, and the preservation of traditions.

As I navigated this new chapter of life, my running routine took a temporary pause. The roads that I’m accustomed to pounding were replaced with the corridors of a different journey – one that holds a special place in my heart. While the miles on my running app remained unchanged, the memories created during this week will forever remain a part of the story.

Running teaches us discipline, consistency, and determination. Similarly, embracing new responsibilities and cultural rituals requires dedication, adaptability, and a willingness to learn. Just as I’ve conquered long distances on the track, I’m now embracing the path of companionship, understanding, and shared aspirations.

While my feet didn’t touch the ground in a runner’s stride, my heart was filled with the rhythm of love, unity, and the promise of a future filled with shared dreams. As I momentarily shifted gears, I was reminded that life’s journey is multifaceted, with each phase contributing to the beautiful mosaic of experiences.

So, while the statistics may show zero miles on the running app this week, the journey of the heart and soul was richer than any distance I’ve ever covered. The determination that propels us to run is mirrored in the determination to build a strong foundation for a life together. And just as a runner celebrates each finish line crossed, I too celebrated the beginning of a new chapter, surrounded by the love and support of those who matter most.

As the coming weeks unfold, the rhythm of running will find its place once again in my routine. But for now, I embrace the memories created during this week of rituals and culture, grateful for the opportunity to experience the various dimensions of life’s journey. Whether on the track or in the heart, every step taken contributes to a story uniquely our own.

See you next week!

July 20, 2019 – Washington DC, USA

Every journey has its own significance, but there are some trips that etch themselves into your memory forever. Our recent visit to Washington DC was one such remarkable journey, not just for the destination itself, but for the emotions and experiences it encompassed. Accompanied by my parents, who were concluding their USA tour, our visit to the nation’s capital was the perfect finale to their adventure-filled journey that began at the majestic Niagara Falls and culminated in the historical embrace of Washington DC.

Our journey to Washington DC wasn’t just about the destination; it was about the entire experience, from the places we stopped along the way to the unique events that we were fortunate enough to witness. Our drive took us through picturesque landscapes and vibrant cities, with a memorable overnight stay in Pittsburgh. As we continued our journey towards the nation’s capital, a sense of anticipation filled the air. Our cozy Airbnb awaited us, offering a warm and comfortable home base for our exploration.

What made our visit even more extraordinary was the timing. We arrived in Washington DC just as the city was celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The atmosphere was electrifying, with people from all walks of life coming together to commemorate one of humanity’s greatest achievements. The festivities were enthralling, and being part of the crowd that celebrated this historic event was a truly unforgettable experience. The sense of unity and pride in that moment was palpable, a reminder of the boundless possibilities when people come together to pursue a common goal.

The following day dawned with excitement as we embarked on a journey through the heart of the city. The iconic US Capitol building stood tall, an emblem of democracy and a testament to the nation’s history. From there, we wandered through the National Mall, a sprawling expanse that houses some of the most significant landmarks in the country. The Lincoln Memorial, a symbol of equality and justice, left an indelible mark on our hearts. The World War II Memorial, a tribute to the sacrifices of countless individuals, was a solemn reminder of the price of freedom.

Of course, no visit to Washington DC would be complete without catching a glimpse of the famous White House. While we weren’t able to tour the interior, seeing this historic residence from the outside was still a memorable moment. The White House stands as a symbol of leadership and the democratic values upon which the nation was built.

Our day concluded at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, a treasure trove of knowledge and wonder. The exhibits transported us through time, unveiling the mysteries of the natural world and showcasing the marvels of human discovery. The exhaustion from the day’s exploration was balanced by the fulfillment that comes from learning and gaining a deeper understanding of our world.

As the sun set over the city, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, we reflected on our journey. Our visit to Washington DC was a blend of historical reverence, intellectual enrichment, and an opportunity to witness a momentous celebration. It was a journey that connected the dots between past and present, reminding us of the importance of preserving history while continuously striving for progress.

The trip was indeed tiring, but the fatigue was overshadowed by a sense of fulfillment that can only be achieved by exploring new horizons and embracing the cultural tapestry of a nation. As we bid farewell to Washington DC, we carried with us not just memories of the landmarks, but the spirit of unity, aspiration, and the profound journey that brought us to the heart of the nation.

July 19, 2019 – Pittsburgh, PA, USA

When embarking on a road trip from our cozy apartment in Michigan to the vibrant city of Washington, D.C., my parents and I decided to make a strategic pit stop in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was an opportunity for us to unwind, recharge, and enjoy the charms of the Steel City. Our journey took us through picturesque landscapes, but Pittsburgh held a special allure, promising us a memorable night.

As we approached Pittsburgh, the anticipation of a break from the road had us all excited. The city’s reputation for its welcoming atmosphere and diverse culinary scene made it an excellent choice for our layover. After a long drive, my parents definitely deserved a little relaxation, and Pittsburgh had just the right ambiance to provide that.

Before checking into our carefully chosen Airbnb, we made it a point to explore the heart of downtown Pittsburgh. The city greeted us with its clean streets and an energetic hustle and bustle that instantly made us feel at home. The first thing that caught our attention was the mesmerizing artificial waterfall that graced the downtown area. Its beauty and tranquility set the tone for a wonderful evening ahead.

Being mindful of my parents’ taste buds, we decided to indulge in some delicious Indian cuisine for dinner. We were pleasantly surprised by the variety and authenticity of the offerings in the city. The culinary journey through the flavors of India was a delight to our senses, and it was heartwarming to see my parents enjoying the familiar tastes so far from home.

As the sun set, we felt the need to retreat to our cozy Airbnb, where we could relax and recharge for the next leg of our journey. The comfort and warmth of our accommodations provided the perfect end to our day in Pittsburgh. With the memories of downtown’s beauty and the delightful Indian feast, we drifted off to sleep, excited about the adventures that awaited us in Washington, D.C.

The following day, before resuming our road trip, we made a point to visit a few notable places in Pittsburgh. Among them was the SV Temple, a renowned destination for many Indian visitors to the city. The spiritual and cultural significance of the temple left a deep impression on all of us. We also explored the Jain and Sai Temples, soaking in the rich spiritual ambiance that these places offered.

Our brief stop in Pittsburgh, which initially seemed like just a convenient break, turned out to be a wonderful experience that added a special chapter to our road trip. The city’s downtown, with its vibrant energy and the soothing waterfall, the delightful Indian food, and the spiritually enriching temple visits, all combined to make this brief layover in Pittsburgh a cherished memory for my parents and me. As we continued our journey to Washington, D.C., we carried with us the warmth and charm of the Steel City, grateful for the unexpected joys it brought us.

Week 02 (January 08 – January 14) – MJ’s Running in 2023

Welcome to the second week of running of 2023.

Welcome back to my weekly running summary, where I share my journey as a runner. While running is a significant part of my routine, there are times when other aspects of life take precedence. In Week 02 (January 08 – January 14), my wife and I were immersed in the vibrant celebrations of Indian festivals that hold deep cultural and emotional significance. Join me as I share how these festivities took center stage and temporarily put my running shoes on hold.

As a couple, my wife and I are proud carriers of our Indian heritage, and participating in traditional festivals is a vital way for us to connect with our roots. This week marked the onset of important Indian festivals, and we were thrilled to immerse ourselves in the colorful and joyous celebrations.

Makar Sankranti, also known as the Kite Festival, is a harvest festival celebrated across India. It symbolizes the transition of the sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn and marks the beginning of longer days. As we soared kites high into the sky, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of unity with the community and a connection to the traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Pongal, celebrated predominantly in South India, is a festival dedicated to the Sun God and the expression of gratitude for the bountiful harvest. We prepared a special dish called “Pongal” made from freshly harvested rice, symbolizing abundance and prosperity. The aroma of the dish and the cheerful gatherings filled the air with a sense of warmth and togetherness.

While my running routine took a backseat during Week 02, I embraced the opportunity to focus on these culturally significant moments. Just as running brings balance and vitality to my life, participating in these festivals provided a different kind of fulfillmentβ€”one that is deeply rooted in our shared heritage and the bonds we strengthen with family and friends.

As runners, we understand the importance of adaptability and flexibility. Week 02 was a reminder that life is a blend of various experiences, and sometimes, taking a step back from our routines helps us appreciate the richness of our cultural heritage. Engaging in these festivities not only fosters a sense of unity with our community but also enables personal growth as we learn from the customs of our ancestors.

As the festivals drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the beauty of our diverse world and the myriad ways in which we can find fulfillment. Just as my running journey continues, so does my exploration of the cultural tapestry that shapes who I am. I eagerly anticipate lacing up my running shoes and hitting the trails again, invigorated by the experiences that Week 02 brought into my life.

Week 02 was a celebration of culture, unity, and tradition. While I didn’t log any miles in my running shoes, I ran heartily into the festivities, surrounded by the love of family, friends, and a rich heritage. As runners, we understand that every stepβ€”whether on the track or in the festival’s dance circleβ€”adds to the vibrant mosaic of our lives. Until next week, when I’m back on the road, keep running and embracing the diverse colors of life!

See you next week!

July 14, 2019 – Frankenmuth, MI, USA

As summer rolled around, my parents and I decided to embark on an exciting adventure to Frankenmuth, Michigan. It was my parents’ first time visiting Frankenmuth, and I was thrilled to introduce them to this quaint and picturesque town. Our destination had much to offer, and I couldn’t wait for my parents to witness its charm firsthand.

Knowing my father’s love for wild animals, we decided to start our adventure at the Frankenmuth Zoo. From playful otters to graceful eagles, every encounter brought smiles to our faces. The zoo visit set a cheerful tone for the day and left us eager for more adventures.

After the zoo, we headed to the heart of Frankenmuth – its charming downtown area. A lively hub of activity, the streets were lined with Bavarian-style buildings adorned with colorful flowers. As we strolled through the streets, we were greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere. The local shops, filled with delightful souvenirs and handcrafted items, caught our attention, and we couldn’t resist picking up a few mementos to remember our day.

One of the highlights of Frankenmuth was its culinary scene. We couldn’t resist trying the mouthwatering German cuisine that the town is famous for. With a variety of restaurants offering delectable sausages, pretzels, and strudels, our taste buds were in for a treat. We savored every bite, and my parents were delighted by the new flavors they experienced.

As we continued our exploration, we found ourselves laughing and sharing stories, creating a sense of togetherness that can only be experienced on a family getaway. The carefree ambiance of the town allowed us to escape from the stresses of everyday life and simply enjoy each other’s company.

Our visit to Frankenmuth, Michigan, turned out to be a magical day of discovery and bonding. From the joyful moments at the zoo to the enchanting streets of downtown, every experience was filled with happiness and wonder. Seeing the joy on my dad’s face as he admired the wild animals and my parents’ excitement as they explored this charming town made the trip all the more special. Frankenmuth offered us a delightful getaway that brought us closer as a family and created memories we will treasure forever. July 07, 2019 – Hartford, CT, USA

July 4th weekend is always a special time for families to come together and celebrate the essence of freedom and unity. This year, my parents and I embarked on an unforgettable journey to Hartford, CT, for what would be the final stop on our weekend trip. Little did we know that this visit would become a treasured chapter in our lives, filled with nostalgia, joy, and new experiences. From revisiting my alma mater to exploring the beauty of the state, each moment was etched into our hearts, ensuring we’d cherish it forever.

Accompanied by my loving parents, the journey to Hartford began. Our gracious host for the trip was my dear friend Subhav and his family, who warmly welcomed us into their home. It felt like a homecoming, surrounded by friends and loved ones in a city that held a special place in my heart.

The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly revisiting the University of Connecticut, both the Hartford and Storrs campuses. As an alumnus, stepping back onto the grounds where I had spent countless hours studying, laughing, and growing was an overwhelming experience. I proudly showed my parents around the classrooms, library, and campus grounds, reliving old memories that had shaped my academic journey. It was a moment of pride to share those special places with my parents, giving them a glimpse into the person I had become during my time at UConn.

Next on our list was a visit to downtown Hartford, a place that had witnessed so many cherished moments during my master’s program. Walking through familiar streets, I pointed out my old apartment building, shared stories of Bushnell Park, and took my parents to the vibrant places where I had spent time with friends. Each corner held a memory, and my heart swelled with happiness as I recounted those cherished experiences.

With spirits high, we made our way to UConn’s Storrs campus, a sprawling and awe-inspiring place that never ceased to amaze visitors. The world-famous UConn Dairy Bar awaited us, and my dad’s love for sweet dishes made him an eager participant. Hearing him exclaim that it was the best ice cream he had ever tasted filled me with pride and joy.

Following the delightful treat, it was time to indulge in my father’s passion for aviation at the New England Air Museum. The serenity of a less crowded museum allowed us to explore the exhibits at our own pace, as if we had the whole place to ourselves. My father’s enthusiasm was contagious, and the experience became an unforgettable chapter in our journey.

To conclude our trip on a serene note, we headed to Rocky Neck State Park, a picturesque beach destination. The tranquil waters and sandy shores offered the perfect setting for us to reminisce about our life in the USA and appreciate the beauty of nature. Splashing in the water, building sandcastles, and watching the sunset painted the perfect picture of happiness and contentment.

Our visit to Hartford, CT, turned out to be much more than a weekend trip. It was an emotional journey down memory lane, a celebration of family, friendship, and new experiences. Reliving my time at UConn with my parents by my side brought a sense of fulfillment and gratitude. Exploring the beauty of Hartford and its surroundings bonded us even further. As we returned home with hearts full of joy and treasured memories, we knew that this visit would forever hold a special place in our hearts.

July 04, 2019 – New York City, NY, USA

New York City, famously known as the “City That Never Sleeps,” had been a dream destination for my parents for as long as I could remember. The opportunity finally presented itself during their USA tour, and I couldn’t have been more excited to show them around this vibrant metropolis. Our journey was filled with laughter, unexpected surprises, and unforgettable experiences that we will cherish for a lifetime.

To avoid a long and tiring drive from Michigan, we opted for a flight from Detroit to Newark. Witnessing the efficiency of domestic flights in the USA left my parents amazed. Inside the Detroit airport, the sight of the metro system operating within the terminal was mind-blowing for them, and they couldn’t help but marvel at the seamless transportation.

Arriving in New York City during the Fourth of July weekend had its challenges. The city was bustling with tourists, and hotels in the famous areas were scarce and costly. However, I managed to book a beautiful resort away from the city, ensuring we had a relaxing time during our stay.

Renting a small sedan for our city exploration turned out to be a challenge due to high demand. We ended up with a massive F250 Super Duty truck, much to my anxiety. Although apprehensive about maneuvering such a large vehicle in the city, we made the most of it, and my parents’ astonishment at the sight of the truck coming their way was priceless.

Our first day began with a visit to the iconic Statue of Liberty. Finding parking proved difficult, but once settled, we had a splendid time exploring Liberty Island. My parents were in awe of the grand architecture they had previously only seen in movies. After a day of fun and exploration, we visited the 9/11 museum, Wall Street, and the 9/11 memorial before concluding at the Brooklyn Bridge. The fatigue caught up with my dad, but an encounter with a fruit vendor provided a much-needed energy boost.

Determined to make the most of our trip, I called the car rental company and miraculously secured a Ford Focus to replace the imposing truck. With a comfortable ride, we enjoyed a delightful dinner, and it warmed my heart to see my parents relishing the experience even more than I did.

On the second day, we embarked on an open bus tour of New York City, which thrilled my dad, as it allowed us to explore the city without much walking. As we reached Times Square, memories from my student days flooded back, and it was a joy to relive those moments with my parents by my side.

As the day came to an end, we bid farewell to the Big Apple and set our sights on Hartford, CT, where a dear friend from my student days graciously offered us a place to stay. The journey back was filled with laughter, reminiscing about our New York City adventure, and creating new memories to cherish.

Our visit to New York City was nothing short of extraordinary. Being able to share this experience with my parents made it even more special. From iconic landmarks to unexpected surprises, our exploration of the “City That Never Sleeps” will forever hold a place in our hearts. As we continued our USA tour, we carried with us the joy and wonder that New York City had bestowed upon us. Until we meet again, Big Apple!

June 29, 2019 – Put-in-Bay, OH, USA

Imagine a picture-perfect summer day, accompanied by laughter, sunshine, and the company of loved ones. That’s exactly how our visit to Put-in-Bay, Ohio, USA, turned out to beβ€”a delightful escape from our everyday routine. Joined by my parents and dear friends from Michigan, we embarked on a journey that would leave us with cherished memories to last a lifetime.

Our adventure began with a road trip from our home to the ferry dock, where we would board a vessel to the enchanting Put-in-Bay island. Anticipation filled the air as we eagerly looked forward to exploring the island’s renowned attractions. The drive itself was filled with laughter and camaraderie, making it an enjoyable experience in itself.

Once we arrived at the ferry dock, we decided to indulge in a quick lunch together. As we savored our meals, we discussed our plans for the day, all the while soaking in the serene ambiance of the surroundings.

The ferry ride to the island was a pleasant 20-minute journey, and it brought back fond memories for my dad, who recalled a similar ferry trip we had taken to Mackinac Island in Michigan. The tranquil waters and the cool breeze sweeping across our faces set the perfect tone for the adventures that lay ahead.

Stepping foot on Put-in-Bay island was like entering a whole new world. To explore the island conveniently, we rented three golf carts to accommodate everyone in our group. It turned out to be a fantastic decision, as we had the freedom to move around at our own pace, witnessing the breathtaking beauty of the island from different perspectives.

One of the highlights of our trip was a visit to a picturesque water body, where kids joyfully played in the refreshing waters, and the adults couldn’t resist joining in the fun. The laughter and excitement were infectious, creating a joyful atmosphere that reflected the true essence of togetherness.

Next on our itinerary was a visit to the downtown area of Put-in-Bay, where we enjoyed some leisure time strolling along charming streets lined with shops and boutiques. The quaint architecture and friendly locals made us feel right at home. To sweeten our experience, we treated ourselves to some delightful ice cream, which was the perfect way to cool down on a warm summer day.

The island offered a plethora of activities, and we made sure to explore them all. From water sports to guided tours, there was something for everyone. Our adventurous spirits led us to exciting endeavors, each moment filled with laughter and shared joy.

As the day gradually transitioned into evening, we made our way to the historic lighthouse that stood majestically on the island’s edge. The view from the lighthouse was breathtaking, providing a unique perspective of the island’s coastline and the vast expanse of Lake Erie. It was an excellent way to conclude our island exploration.

As the sun began to set, we knew it was time to bid farewell to this captivating island. Tired, but with hearts full of happiness, we boarded the ferry to return home. Reflecting on the day’s adventures, we all agreed that Put-in-Bay had exceeded our expectations, providing us with a memorable experience.

Our visit to Put-in-Bay was a true testament to the power of family and friendship. It reinforced the idea that spending quality time with loved ones in a beautiful setting can create lasting bonds and cherished memories. From the ferry ride to the exploration of the island’s treasures, every moment was filled with love, laughter, and joy.

As we made our way back, we knew that this wouldn’t be the last time we would visit Put-in-Bay. The island had woven its magic on us, and we couldn’t wait to return for more adventures and to create even more beautiful memories. Until then, we carry the spirit of Put-in-Bay in our hearts, a reminder of a perfect day spent with the people we cherish the most.
