July 04, 2019 – New York City, NY, USA

New York City, famously known as the “City That Never Sleeps,” had been a dream destination for my parents for as long as I could remember. The opportunity finally presented itself during their USA tour, and I couldn’t have been more excited to show them around this vibrant metropolis. Our journey was filled with laughter, unexpected surprises, and unforgettable experiences that we will cherish for a lifetime.

To avoid a long and tiring drive from Michigan, we opted for a flight from Detroit to Newark. Witnessing the efficiency of domestic flights in the USA left my parents amazed. Inside the Detroit airport, the sight of the metro system operating within the terminal was mind-blowing for them, and they couldn’t help but marvel at the seamless transportation.

Arriving in New York City during the Fourth of July weekend had its challenges. The city was bustling with tourists, and hotels in the famous areas were scarce and costly. However, I managed to book a beautiful resort away from the city, ensuring we had a relaxing time during our stay.

Renting a small sedan for our city exploration turned out to be a challenge due to high demand. We ended up with a massive F250 Super Duty truck, much to my anxiety. Although apprehensive about maneuvering such a large vehicle in the city, we made the most of it, and my parents’ astonishment at the sight of the truck coming their way was priceless.

Our first day began with a visit to the iconic Statue of Liberty. Finding parking proved difficult, but once settled, we had a splendid time exploring Liberty Island. My parents were in awe of the grand architecture they had previously only seen in movies. After a day of fun and exploration, we visited the 9/11 museum, Wall Street, and the 9/11 memorial before concluding at the Brooklyn Bridge. The fatigue caught up with my dad, but an encounter with a fruit vendor provided a much-needed energy boost.

Determined to make the most of our trip, I called the car rental company and miraculously secured a Ford Focus to replace the imposing truck. With a comfortable ride, we enjoyed a delightful dinner, and it warmed my heart to see my parents relishing the experience even more than I did.

On the second day, we embarked on an open bus tour of New York City, which thrilled my dad, as it allowed us to explore the city without much walking. As we reached Times Square, memories from my student days flooded back, and it was a joy to relive those moments with my parents by my side.

As the day came to an end, we bid farewell to the Big Apple and set our sights on Hartford, CT, where a dear friend from my student days graciously offered us a place to stay. The journey back was filled with laughter, reminiscing about our New York City adventure, and creating new memories to cherish.

Our visit to New York City was nothing short of extraordinary. Being able to share this experience with my parents made it even more special. From iconic landmarks to unexpected surprises, our exploration of the “City That Never Sleeps” will forever hold a place in our hearts. As we continued our USA tour, we carried with us the joy and wonder that New York City had bestowed upon us. Until we meet again, Big Apple!
