Prep KickOff – Detroit FreePress International Marathon – October 18, 2020

The entire credit for doing this goes to AMAZON PRIME!

I know it sounds weird, so let me explain myself.

It all started when I decided to stay in for the December shut-down period. People in Michigan should know what a shut-down period is; For those who are not, the big 3 (Ford, GM, and Chrysler) do get a couple of weeks off during the later part of December as the factories are closed during this time. 🏭
Most of my friends decided to travel; However, I, having already been to more than 25 🥱 places in 6 different countries 🌍 this year, decided to stay low and spend time retrospecting and reflecting upon the last and foresee the next decade.
That’s when I had this wonderful idea to search for “running” documentaries on the Amazon Prime; I love watching documentaries and I have always been a big fan of runners/marathoners. 🏃🏽‍♂️🏃🏼‍♀️

The first recommendation that I got was Brittany Runs a Marathon. Boy, this movie was so inspirational and emotional 🤓; I did not get up from my seat, even for taking a sip of water even when I was feeling thirsty 🌊. I have never been so inspired by one single scene in a movie. Starting that day, I started picturing this scene whenever I feel like giving up.

Inspirational scene: Brittany Run a Marathon (Amazon Prime)

The genius of this scene is so good. 👏🏽 It is that one moment (which is all up to yourself), whether you want to push yourself or not. This spirit is represented by the sheer will-power of Brittany and the way she chooses to push the door open. It is her “superpower” 💥 to bolt that door open and start running 🏃🏼‍♀️. Even though she doesn’t succeed in the first attempt, but her sheer try is what matters. This message is so subtly conveyed by the director of this movie – Mr. Paul Downs Colaizzo.

This movie opened the floodgates of the marathon, triathlon, and ultra-marathon documentaries for me. I followed the following documentaries after BRAM.

Gosh, there is an abundance of inspirational movies and documentaries available; I felt so bad after all this content that I spent countless hours watching something useless instead of watching these.

But, as they say, Better late than never, I got a sense of what I want to do this year and what I want to achieve; So, on the eve of December 31st, 2019, I told myself, I have to accomplish a lot of things, out of which the following three must be part of.

Let us see I live up to my expectations or not. I hope if I can accomplish at least these three goals this year, I would declare it as a victory.

Keeping this goal in mind, I chalked up the Marathon prep plan. I took a lot of help from some of the colleagues at Ford, and some online resources like Marathon Training. With the help of some wonderful people and an abundance of positive resources available, I am excited to share my Marathon prep plan as follows.

Milind’s Marathon Prep Plan (2020)

As most of you know, I am a regular CrossFitter 🏋🏼‍♂️, so it will be hard for me to give up 😭 CrossFir during the month of April and October; But, I think this sacrifice is very important to achieve the three goals that I mentioned above. I am very excited to follow this plan. I hope I will be able to finish the Half-Marathon and Marathon in respectable time ⏱. I will keep you guys posted on my progress and the date of my Ultra-Marathon once I decide it. 🤞🏽

I will need support and encouragements from each and every one of you to achieve this mammoth task. ✌🏽🤙🏽🤜🏽🤛🏽👏🏽

Please wish me luck. 🍀🧧

Talk to you later!

Dec 14, 2019 – Day 14 of 30-day 100 push-ups 😌😇

Progress! Progress! Progress! 💪🏽 This one word has been the highlight of my push-ups sessions since the day I experienced my breathing and rep strategy. Looks like it is paying off big time, as I cut down ⬇️ the time for the 100 push-ups along with increasing 🆙 the maximum number of push-ups in a single rep.
Gosh, it feels good to finally see the amazing results of your constant hard work. 😎

You will find out the numbers in a few minutes ⏱, but reflecting upon my performance just a few days ago, I am being humbled 😊 to see how a few “correct techniques” can positively affect your body and confidence; It motivates 🧘🏼‍♂️ you to perform better and be the best version of yourself. #motivation #inspiration because, why not!

Now, it is time to check out the Time-Lapse from December 14, 2019. When I started with this attempt, I did not realize I would be able to exceed my goal and crack 04:05 for the 100 push-ups. It was not on my mind, I was just happy 😊 to get better every single day; But, cutting down almost a minute and a half is a huge feat and I am glad I could do it 🙌🏽. Achieving 39 push-ups in a single rep just goes on to show you that with enough practice, you can master anything. 🤓 I know, I still have half a month to go and you never know what can happen during that time. So, just hope for the best and keep working! 🤞🏽

30 Days 100 push-ups progress tracker 🤘🏽

What an achievement to cut down almost 100 seconds for the 100 push-ups in the span of five days. Trust me, it was not an easy task. 🚫 It was the sweet fruit of a lot of sweat and hard work; And, I am glad, I reached there! 😼

As this is the mid-month check-in. Let us take a look at a couple graphs and track my overall progress.

  • Maximum Push-ups per repetition

I have made tremendous progress in this department. I almost quadrupled 4️⃣ my performance in this category.
The first day, I could barely complete 10 push-ups in the first rep; whereas, by the last day of the second week, I increased that number to 39. Isn’t it amazing? 39 push-ups represent my personal best in this category. 😁

Here’s the graph for maximum push-ups in a single rep till mid-December 2019.

progress till week 2- maximum number of push-ups per rep
  • Total time taken for 100 push-ups

Last week when I checked my performance in this category, I was not “very” pleased, but, during the second week, I took control of myself and surprised myself with the progress I made. 🤗
I still remember the first day I started this activity. I took a good 08:25. I cut this down to 06:25 at the end of the first week. Second week is where I could really started improving the speed and took only 04:05 to finish my 100 push-ups. I have more than halved my total time, and I could not be happier. I am so so glad with my performance. 😸
As promised here’s the graph to showcase my progress.

Ending this week and the post on a high note!

How it started (for me) – Breaking Bad 🧪👨🏼‍🔬

Before I was introduced to this most amazing, awesome, intense, mind-blowing TV show, I used to watch some light hearted shows like Friends 💑 and The Office. But, even after binge watching these shows for more than 5-10 times, you get bored 🥱 of it. Thats when I was searching for a TV show / web series, which will replace my love for Friends and The Office. Enters Breaking Bad! 📺🧪🥼

I like to watch TV shows and movies without much research and context for that one moment of surprise 🙆🏽‍♂️. That’s why, I never imagined, that Breaking Bad will soon become my most favorite TV show ever in my wildest dreams. The one moment of surprise that I crave for in a web series or a movie, Breaking Bad sure as hell delivers them in dozens 🔢. I cannot fathom enough how much I love this show and how much I enjoy every single second of it, and unfortunately, I cannot get enough of it. #fanboy #moment

If you think I am going to express my entire love in this one post for this show, you are wrong. There are going to be multiple posts on this blog dedicated to this super awesome show. So, brace yourself.

Continuing with our topic, I still remember, it was a Thursday and I wanted to stay away from Thursday Night Football as it was a boring game; Suddenly, a light bulb 💡 went off in my head 🧠 and I knew what I wanted to watch.
The moment I saw the green screen and the picture that you see at the start, I knew something special is about to happen. The way they started the show, no matter how lengthy it was, they never lost me, and that’s what made me stick to it.

This is how my breaking bad journey began and I am happy that it never finished, even after finishing all five seasons of the show and witnessing the sequels – both “Better Call Saul” and “El Camino“.

I just had to bow down to the genius of its creator 🎬 Mr. Vince Gilligan. This show has had such a positive influence and impact, though the protagonist turns bad throughout the series. It taught me that you must pursue what you are passionate about even though you have to go against the entire world! And boy, preparation and planning is key to everything. EVERYTHING! Period! 🧘🏼‍♂️

I think it is time to stop blabbering about Breaking Bad. Otherwise, we will be here for quite some time!

Time to say Goodbye and see you again!

Mar 17, 2014 – Holi (Festival of colors) – Patansaongi, Maharashtra, India 🎨 🎉🥳

This is in continuation of the last Travel post I made which took place on March 07, 2014. This was one of the two reasons I was visiting home 🏠 from Bangalore.

For those who do not know what Holi is, it is also called as Festival 🥳 of Colors. People following Hindu 🛕 religion celebrate this festival every year in the month of March. People, who are interested in learning why we celebrate this festival, you can find more about this by clicking here. If you want the shorter version – “It marks the end of evil by the hands of God Vishnu.” The God Vishnu took avatar of Narsimha to kill 🩸 the evil King Hiranyakashipu. This is how the Narsimha is portrayed in Indian 🇮🇳 Mythology.

Being an atheist 🙅🏽‍♂️ myself, it was kind of mind-blowing to research about this topic and give you the gist of it. But, enough of it. Let us get started with the Holi celebrations.

Usually, the Holi celebrations begin on the eve of the Holi festival by burning 🔥 up wood to represent the burning of demoness Holika. The day of the festival is spent in playing with the colors – either dry or wet. Most of the urban population in India prefer Holi-themed parties 👯‍♀️👯‍♂️, with music 🎧 and drinks 🍾 to celebrate Holi. Whereas some prefer to follow the traditional “Bhaang”. 🍶

I started my celebration by letting my sisters color me. Obviously, we had to capture those moments in pictures 🌅. They mostly used dry colors, which is both environment friendly and easy to get off from your body ♥️. One thing to know about me- I am extremely lazy when it comes to applying colors to others; Be it Holi or any other Hindu festival involving colors, so I barely color anyone, and here also, I did not color my sisters, which comes across a little controversial when it comes to siblings’ rivalry 🙅🏽‍♂️🙅🏽‍♀️. But, trust me, my laziness is more powerful than this lovely rivalry. 💪🏽
You can see my amusement in the picture below.

Me after playing Holi with my sisters

One funny thing that I remembered about this picture is that the T-shirt 👕 that I am wearing was given to me by one of my ex-girlfriends in college. Now you will say what is so funny about that, well, the funny part is we were in relationship only for a week or two, before things went downhill; But that story is for some other time.

Now, getting back to the Holi celebrations, there is a tradition at my home to invite friends and other family members for some snacks 🍿 and Indian Masala Tea ☕️. This was the first time in a long time that I was home, so I invited a few of my childhood 🧒🏽 friends home. It turned out to be a bad call for me, because here is what they did to me! 🤣

Me after playing Holi with my friends

My friends acted like most friends do. 🤷🏽‍♂️ They ate food at my place and then did not leave without coloring me. They did not even use the dry color or something which will get off quickly. I am sure they deliberately used the harsh color for skin so that it will take at least a week or two to get off. But, hey, that’s what friends are for, right? I do not regret inviting them over to play Holi with me a single bit. 👍🏽

Here I am with my friends.

We look absolutely wild in this one!

After they left, the first thing I did was to check if the color could get off quickly and boy, I failed! 👎🏽 So, instead of cursing them, I continued with my day like it was no big deal – which is true for most of us in India, especially during Holi.

I clicked many pictures with my family; Spent much needed quality time with them, as I was about to leave for work in a couple of days. I was so not ready 😐 to bid goodbye 👋🏽 to my family, but had to do it!

Gosh, I miss those simple times so much! It is true, no matter how big you become in life, you are sure to miss the good old days! #nostalgic 😁

Hope it was worth the read! Catch you on the flippity flop.

Dec 13, 2019 – Day 13 of 30-day 100 push-ups 😌😇

With one day to go for the mid-month check-in, I feel good that I am on the right track. Today’s session was the testimonial of this very fact. Today is the day I started feeling better about myself after starting the 100 push-ups.

You will see in the coming sections how I killed these 100 push-ups. I did not have a specific goal in mind for today. I just wanted to listen to my body and see what’s it telling me. Turns out, when you do these 100 push-ups for a long time, your body gets used to it; And (wait for it) without you even realizing, it accomplishes the task that you once thought was out of your reach.
Every day, I am fortunate enough to learn new things about myself and the magic of human persistence. #motivation #michaelscott

If you compare today’s workout with yesterday’s, you will find that I seem to be more relaxed during today’s session. The reason behind this, as I already stated, is that I was just doing 100 push-ups without aiming for any goal. Surprisingly, it paid off. IMO, the reason that happened is because my body has built up enough stamina and is ready to take on this challenge quite lightly. I might be wrong, but this is something that I believe in right now.

Take a look at the Time-Lapse from December 13, 2019 and see for yourself. My biceps are getting bigger and am feeling stronger every day. My breaks have dramatically reduced and the number of push-ups have increased for each rep. In the video, you can also see me pushing myself to go for more even when I feel tired.
The point I am trying to make here is that I am in the rhythm right now, and I am pretty sure nothing can stop me right now!

December 13, 2019 100 push-ups 😎

If you looked at the video above, the one thing that I find which needs more improvements is the number of breaks. I think I am capable of cutting down that number, so my next goal is that. Let’s see how it goes.

The numbers part of the post is here. My daily tracker. 👇🏽

Looking at the tracker above, you can see that I easily cut down 30 seconds from the total time taken for the 100 push-ups and I hit my new personal record of the 35 push-ups in a single rep. This is worth celebrating! #humblebrag

Tomorrow, we will reflect upon my progress in the last two weeks. Its going to be filled with charts and numbers and may be some inspirational and motivational quotes. WHO KNOWS!

Dec 12, 2019 – Day 12 of 30-day 100 push-ups 😎🤘🏽

I finally cracked the 5-minute target for the 100 push-ups. 😎💪🏽✌🏽😌🥳

Today’s Milind is happier 😊 than the Grumpy 😡 Milind yesterday. I am so glad that I did use that “failed” strategy yesterday; It helped me achieve this goal and let me tell, things are only going to get better from here. 😇 #markmywords

Taking all the required learnings from yesterday’s session, I had only one goal in mind – “BEATING 5-MINUTES FOR 100 PUSH-UPS”. Before actually starting the push-ups, I told myself I must do this whatever it takes. I think the fire 🔥and spark 🧨 that I was missing since day 1, finally came to light today and was enough to lift 🏋🏼‍♂️ me up and achieve my highly coveted target 🎯. If you want to use one word to describe this feat, it will be “FOCUS”.

I think I did not aim for beating the maximum number of push-ups in a single rep. I believe it was the byproduct of the strategy that I used to reduce my time below 5 minutes. Funny how things work. One thing that I learnt today was apart from the breathing technique and the posture for the push-ups, we also need focus to accomplish this “mammoth” 😰 task. If you think about it, the first two are physical aspects of this challenge, whereas the latter one is the mental 🧠. It is very important to be mentally prepared for achieving something in life, coupled with the physical characteristics for it. I guess, I let myself be a little motivational there. 😝

I have only one learning in this session – 🟢 FOCUS, FOCUS, and more FOCUS.

We must have a tunnel vision in life what we want, and should go all in to achieve that. I have had used it before, and am still using it, and it seems to be working for me so far. 🙌🏽

Time to pay close attention to the Time-Lapse from December 12, 2019. Here, you can see the tunnel vision that I talked about in my eyes (well, if you can reduce the playback speed 🤪). I am happy with this feat.

30 Days 100 push-ups progress tracker 🤘🏽

I would like to take the learnings for the last 12 days and improve upon it. I remember when I started off, I thought 5-minute mark was impossible. And, here we are! So, why don’t I go for 4-minutes. Seems far fetched, but if I progress like this, I am sure that day is not far from today. 👀

Let us see how it goes and hope for the best. 🙏🏽

I am so happy 😊 to end this session on a happy note! tạm biệt ✌🏽 ✌🏽

Dec 11, 2019 – Day 11 of 30-day 100 push-ups 👎🏽🤐😢

A failed strategy! 👎🏽😾😑😭😤😡
These three words are enough to describe today’s 100 push-ups. I chose this day very carefully to try a couple of new things and boy, I failed miserably 😡 trying those techniques. The reason for trying new things was obvious to me. Unless I try new things and technique, how I am supposed to be a better version of myself every passing day? The reason my strategy did not work because it was just not good enough. 👎🏽

If you remember, yesterday, I was on the verge of breaking a 5-minute mark for the 100 push-ups, only a 5 second more than my desired target; Therefore, instead of going for it, I gave a shot to a new technique. The strategy was – “instead of going all out during the first rep, I should preserve my energy and do only 10 push-ups each rep, consuming lesser energy, which I can use during the latter reps”. I must tell you, I WAS SO WRONG!

As you will check out my Time-Lapse video later in the post, I could not “preserve” that energy ⚡️ and was hardly able to keep up with the usual pace. My arms were sore doing more reps and I found myself out of breath most of the time after 50-60 push-ups. It was a bad gamble and I am not afraid to say that I lost it all.

At the end of this session, instead of being disappointed, I was a happy person, and, I think I should be. I tried a new thing and I failed, and that’s okay; Because, I learnt something new about myself, my body, and the way it responds to the 100 push-ups.
I think the below pointers might help you guys.

  1. 🟢 Instead of limiting yourself, you must go all in and push yourself at times to achieve your goals. 🤘🏽
  2. 🔴 I held back and did not let my body work at its full potential, which did not help me achieve my goal and beat my previous record. A lesson well learnt! 👨🏽‍🏫

For those of you who are waiting for the Time-Lapse 📹 from December 11, 2019, here you go. As you can see I could not keep up the 10 push-ups per rep for more than 3 reps. During the fourth rep, I realized my mistake, but went ahead with it anyway. By the end of the 80-90 push-ups, my arms were super tired 🥱; I just wanted it to finish. 🏁

Dec 10, 2019 – Day 10 of 30-day 100 push-ups 💪🏽😌

As I told you yesterday, beating your previous record helps you so much you sometimes surprise yourself with the results. This is exactly what happened with me today, and I cannot express how happy I am with it.

I think I paid enough attention to the learnings from the previous session. I got the beat which I needed to last longer during the first rep of the 32 push-ups. I remember as soon as I reached 30 push-ups, my arms were telling me to give up; But, I convinced myself to push for one more push-up and one more after that. This is the reason, I could better previous best of 30 push-ups by a couple more. Felt like a true athlete! 🤪😝 #humblebrag

Few points to note –

  1. 🟢 I should push myself like this every single day. It will help me beat my goal and set new ones.💪🏽
  2. 🟢 More focus should be given to posture and my body movement. I am sure it will help me improve further.

Here’s the Time-Lapse from December 10, 2019. Even though I made some progress compared to yesterday, I think it can be further improved by taking less breaks and I will be able to do that if I further improve my breathing technique.

Looking at the result above 👆🏽, you cannot help but inspire yourselves in more ways than you imagine! Cutting down 20 seconds from this session helped me inspire so much that I think I can finally crack down the five-minute barrier. I am so looking forward to it!

Can’t wait to share tomorrow’s progress! Take care!

Dec 09, 2019 – Day 9 of 30-day 100 push-ups 💪🏽😌

I was pumped-up for my push-ups looking at the results from yesterday. One week into the routine, I had no problems getting up from the bed and start stretching for these push-ups. I was like “I am the BOSS” & “Let’s do this”!
I know it sounds corny; but, that’s just the way I felt.

The biggest surprise for today’s push-ups was the timing. I know I was aiming to cut down my time by some margin; but, when I saw that I did cut down an entire minute from the total time, I was all over the moon. I had struggled with cutting time down in the first week and was glad to find out I finally did what I wanted to using the learnings from the previous sessions. It bolsters my belief in “Everything is possible with the right technique!”. Who is ready for another challenge? Answer- This guy 🙋🏽‍♂️😎

Talking about improving the maximum number of push-ups in a rep, I improved in that area by three more push-ups and tied for the previous best of 30. I was convincingly happy with this performance 💪🏽 and felt like a bonus when I was trying for cutting down the time.

I greatly learnt the importance of proper technique and breathing pattern during today’s session and found out 🙇🏽-

  1. 🟢 I should inhale a big breath before starting off with the push-ups.
  2. 🟢 I should push myself a little harder when I think that I am done with the push-ups, getting those 1-2 extra push-ups in a rep.
  3. 🟢 keep improving like this and you will see some more great results! 😎

You can see the difference in attitude while I attack these push-ups. The Time-Lapse from December 09, 2019 is below.

A minute improvement in the total time taken and increasing the maximum number of push-ups in a rep by 3 makes me wanna say – “BRING IT ONNN!” 🤜🏽

All right then, see you until next time!

Dec 08, 2019 – Day 8 of 30-day 100 push-ups 💪🏽😌😑

The first day of the second week! I think this was motivating enough for me to excel in today’s 100 push-ups; And, that’s what I did. I beat yesterday’s performance (not by much), but it was very important for me to start the week on a high note – driving me to work even harder to beat my last session.

As I have a plan now, my goal is to stick to it and execute it daily. If I could do that, I would be a better version of everyday – which is my ultimate goal.
I was glad to see a 5 second improvement in the total time taken to finish the 100 push-ups. Plus, I did improve the max push-ups in a single rep by 4. This was a huge thing for me as I did not finish the first week on a high note. You can term it as a “Moral Booster”.

As always, the learnings are the most important part for me in these blog posts. The one key takeaway from all these attempts is that the breathing technique is more important than you think for any workout. So, my focus is going to be improving that to increase my performance levels.

  1. 🟢 Finished the 100 push-ups 5 seconds in advance. 🤞🏽
  2. 🟢 For the first time, I came back stronger after falling behind in terms of number of push-ups in a single rep. I must tell ya, it is a good feeling. 🤘🏽
  3. 🔴 I improved the breathing technique, with more room for improvements. Also, I should myself a little bit harder to improve my performance just by a tiny bit.

Here’s the interesting part of this blog post – the Time-Lapse from December 08, 2019. I improved a couple reps by breathing properly and pushing myself for the last push-up in each rep. A positive 🕉 change I did after a week’s efforts.

30 Days 100 push-ups progress tracker 🤘🏽

A slight increase in performance and starting the week #2 in the right fashion. I understand this week is crucial for me as I would be up for a mid-month performance comparison and would be super depressed if I do not show up with good numbers.

Instead of thinking about that right now, the more important thing for me to focus on each day at a time and try to give my everything in those 100 push-ups.

All good for today, then! Baibai!
