May 20, 2017 – Lexicon, New York City, NY, USA

What a night!

This night was the culmination of Nidhi’s and mine holiday, living with Udit and Randip at their Long Island apartment.

Nidhi had been on our back for a few weeks now that she really wanted to check out Lexicon. We could put it on hold for sometime, but, eventually, we caved in.

Being an ardent fan of going out and checking out new places, I didn’t mind joining Nidhi, Udit, and other friends to this night of adventure and cheer for one of the most memorable nights of my life.

The plan was to catch a subway from Long Island to NYC. Meet a few people at the nearby club. Hang out a little bit, before heading to Lexicon. Have some fun at Lexicon and then head back to Long Island in the early morning.

The plan was well and the only question was the execution & I was glad that we didn’t disappoint ourselves.

We left Long Island in time. It was a weekend, so we knew it would be rush hour, everyone trying to get to NYC to have a weekend getaway. The journey to NYC was a fun one. We reached the metro station and while awaiting for the metro arrive, we thought it would be a good idea to get six cans of beer while riding the metro to NYC. It turned out to be a good idea as we not only chugged all those beer cans, but had fun doing that.
Before this day, I didn’t know we were allowed to drink inside a metro.
We had a lot of fun during this short journey, setting our moods correctly for the night that was unraveling before our eyes.

The next stop was a high end pub at the heart of the NYC. We had to wait at least 10-15 minutes to get inside this pub, as it was a rush hour. Even after waiting for such a long time, we made sure to keep the conversation going with each other, as we were meeting a few of other friends here for the first time. You can imagine we had a lot to talk about.

The pub was at the top of a skyscraper, giving us beautiful views of the city that never sleeps. My friend Udit told me while leaving for NYC to get a small whiskey flask and fill it up with some booze, so that we don’t have to pay a lot when we start drinking at these pubs. I got his point and it was an amazing tip. I filled my flask with some Jack Daniels and that’s what we drank the most throughout the night. Unfortunately, it wasn’t sufficient for everyone and we had to order extra drinks after a couple rounds.

The view from this pub was amazing. We had the entire viewing area to ourselves and we made sure we click many pictures of the evening. We had a great company too, so there was nothing to worry about.
This was one of those evenings when a small town boy within me was overwhelmed looking at the magnificence of NYC. Growing up in Patansaongi, I had a simple life. I used to play cricket with my childhood buddies and used to heat home food. Studying hard was the only way to progress in life. After years of hard work of toil from both myself and my parents, I could enjoy these moments and was simply overwhelmed because (frankly) it was too much to comprehend that I was *actually* living that moment.
This sweet realization made me go quiet a little bit and was enjoying the cool breeze on that Saturday evening, surrounded by my friends.

After spending more than an hour here, it was time to head to Lexicon, which was our actual attraction of the night. By this time in the evening, I think, most of us were a little more drunk than being sober.
Once we got to Lexicon, we stood in line to get inside. Nidhi had this brilliant idea of checking with the bouncer who was standing at the entrance, as she saw mostly guys lining up for the entry. As soon as that bouncer saw Nidhi, he told her to go inside, resulting us to tag along with her. This was again a moment that I was living that I had only seen in movies before. This night was turning out to be an awesome one!

NOTHING. I repeat, NOTHING would have prepared me to brace what I was going to witness when I stepped inside Lexicon. I knew Nidhi told me that they play Bollywood songs, but I didn’t know that they played *only* Bollywood songs. The Bollywood buff in me (back then, I was a huge Bollywood fan) got so happy to listen to the famous Bollywood numbers and seeing hundreds of people rocking the dance floor, I didn’t know where to begin.

We got a spot to sit somewhere. Once we got acquainted to the atmosphere, it was time to hit the dance floor. Man, it was crazy. I never saw so many Indian people rocking the dance floor. The guys were were trying to impress the girls that they brought here and the girls were trying to impress the boys with their latke zatke.
I saw so many people making out, so many guys trying to seduce girls, sometimes many boys on a single girl. It was fun to see all that with your friends, and passing comments while doing so. This is what was missing from my life in Hartford – being careless, and not at all arduous with my behavior, to let loose and don’t worry about anything.

I was happy that I was part of it and my friends are the one of the reasons this night stands out as a memorable one. We danced, drank, and danced some more. There were countless Bollywood songs blazing in the background and our legs didn’t know when to stop. There were around 5-6 people in our group, so everyone was going to the bar and get some drinks for either themselves or for the group. When it was my turn, I went for the shots and got some shots for Nidhi and Udit too. After having those shots, we got some extra energy to rock on some more Bollywood numbers.

When we were tired, we came out of the steamy Lexicon floor to the outside to enjoy some smoke. It gave us enough energy to go inside one more time and enjoy one more hour of music as it was about to close at 4AM.

We made sure we stayed till the end, as it was worth it. In the middle of all this, I am having a hard time to remember whether we actually consumed any food or not. It is still blurry for me and not sure if I will be able to remember it.

We bade goodbyes to our other friends when Lexicon shut down. We caught an uber to the metro station and were on our way back to Lexicon. Man, that ride back to Lexicon was so much fun.
Nidhi and I were singing constantly under the influence of Alcohol and it was Udit’s responsibility to take care of us and make sure we don’t do anything stupid. The biggest surprise to me was that even though we were constantly singing at 5AM, nobody sooshed us. That was one of the first instances that I witnessed how a free country looks and feels like. We sang so many explicit Hindi songs and had a blast doing it.
Our friend, Randip, was kind enough to pick us up from the metro station.

It was amazing night. So amazing that writing about it brought countless chuckles to my face. I am smiling! I think this was the last time Nidhi and I hung out together!
Thanks for the lovely memories. Grateful!

Next stop – some family time at the Rocky Neck State Park, Connecticut.

WFH – Month 7 (September 18 – October 17)

ARCHIVE
First month (March 17 – April 16)
Second month (April 17 – May 16)
Third month (May 17 – June 17)
Fourth month (June 18 – July 17)
Fifth month (July 18 – August 17)
Six month (August 18 – September 17)

This is the new normal now! So, welcome to one more month of working from home!

MAJOR HAPPENINGS
Took an afternoon nap in the backyard
I know that it doesn’t sound like a big deal, but for me, it is. I am a huge sucker for afternoon naps, so whenever I take one, I couldn’t be happier.
It had been almost 8 months that I took an afternoon nap, due to work schedule and weekend activities, but one Sunday afternoon was different.
Michigan weather was in full bloom. The sunlight was not too harsh to suffer sunburn and not too dim to arrest the Summer feelings. It was just perfect. We had lunch outside in the backyard. And after the lunch, it was time to relax a little bit and eventually take a nap.

I wasn’t planning for a nap, but, didn’t even realize when I dozed off. Every time I take an afternoon nap, I usually drink tea, which I exactly what I did and loved it.
It was awesome!

Celebrated Pappa’s birthday, He’s 60 now!
Couldn’t believe Pappa is 60 now. It was a sweet realization that quickly our parents grow old. Now seems to be a good time that I start taking care of them.
Big things to plan and many more developments to come.

My sisters are home and it was wonderful to celebrate Pappa’s birthday with everyone around. It sucked that I was so far away, but, anyway was part of the celebrations. It was lovely to see everyone spending time with each other and having fun!
Happy Birthday, Pappa!

Bonsai Trees at Frederick Meijer Garden in Grand Rapids, Michigan
It was the first time I was looking at the Bonsai Trees this close. When we made a plan to visit Frederick Meijer Garden in Grand Rapids, I wasn’t sure what to expect as I didn’t do my research before visiting this place. Having said that, I wasn’t disappointed at all when I actually reached this place.
This place is filled with so many things to check out that we were tired by the end of the day. You must be prepared to do a lot of walking throughout different gardens that are present here. I loved everything that this place has to offer to; But, the Bonsai Tree show was the highlight of the trip.
We were lucky that they were hosting the Bonsai Tree show that weekend, and we got to see different types of Bonsai trees from close. I was blown by their presentation as I couldn’t fathom the fact that these trees were naturally grown.
Must visit place.

Fall Colors in Michigan
Ah! What a time to be alive in Michigan.
Michigan doesn’t stop to amaze me. When I first came to Michigan, I wasn’t aware about many cool and beautiful things that this place had to offer. I am slowly realizing how many cool places there are in Michigan and quite close to my place.

We checked out Fall Colors at many places in Michigan and would love to check out some more. Some of those places were Maybury State Park, Lower Huron Metropark, and obviously Hines Drive.

Visited Blue Water River Walk in Port Huron, Michigan
This was one more cool place we visited in Port Huron. It caught me by surprise that the scenery around the Blue Water River Walk was so gorgeous, I had to soak it in its entirety.

Loved the cool breeze and constant sunlight, making it awesome day outing for us.

COVID19 POSITIVE CASES IN MICHIGAN
The COVID19 Positive Cases were on the rise throughout the US and Michigan was no exception.

The numbers are on the rise everywhere, which made me too depressing to keep track of it. Frankly, I have stopped tracking the numbers in both Michigan and USA, and have started living with the fact that the cases are not going to go down, especially because we are heading into the North American winter and the fact that the flu season is surrounding us just makes us feel like hostiles.
I think vaccines and correct restriction is the only way to combat this virus.

Fingers crossed!

RUNNING
Running has been decent this month.

I could finish a total distance of 85.8 miles. As much as I wanted this number to be greater than 100 miles, I couldn’t achieve it as the last week of this month, I spent mostly recovering from my knee injury. In the previous months, I could finish 3 Half Marathons every month, but couldn’t do it this month. I could finish only 1 Half Marathon, bringing the total number of Half Marathons to 12. Running 12 Half Marathons in 2020 was one of my goals, and I was glad that I could finish it in time.

BIKING
Biking will reduce as we progress with the year. It is starting to get chilly here in North America, which is becoming sort of a blocker for my biking stints. I am not sure if I would go out of my way to go out for biking.

I could manage to bike for like 40 miles and expect it to go down further from here.

HIKING
Hiking has also been a poor show of 16 miles. There is nothing much to say, again, chilly weather and all!

THE CONCLUSION
WEAR A MASK! MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING!

& enjoy some pictures from this month.

Till then, take care & stay safe!

Week 42 (October 18 – October 24) – Running 1,000 miles in 2020

After a disappointing and injured Week 41, let us check out if I will be able to finish the magical number of 800 miles this week or not?

Day 1 – Sunday, October 18, 2020 – WFH Day 216
The not-so-good Michigan weather didn’t allow me go out for run. By the time, it was a little bit better, we went to Maybury State Park again to explore the Fall colors.
The plan was to walk for a little bit and head home before it gets dark, but, while hiking through the woods, we lost our way and ended up spending a good 2 hours hiking different hidden trails that Maybury had to offer.

Day 2 – Monday, October 19, 2020 WFH Day 217
It was the first day of the workweek and I couldn’t be happier to have completed 8 miles of running. The pace was slow to avoid any injury to the healing knee.

When I started the run, I wanted to take it slow and just be done with a 5K. By the time I was done with the distance, I called my friends who told me that they would join me for the run, which was good for me, as I would get to run more miles and get to the weekly target faster.

We started running together and by the time they were done, I was at 8.3 miles, which seemed to be a good target to stop at. This was the first run of the week and fortunately, exceeded my expectations.

Day 3 – Tuesday, October 20, 2020WFH Day 218
The second day of the workweek and second consecutive day of running. My hurt knee is looking better and I have started to put some more pressure on it.
I know I might sound like an alarmist, but I like to take early precautions than to cause further injury, resulting in stopping running for some time – which I didn’t/don’t/won’t want to do!

Anyway, the run started with my slow pace. I looked good and wanted to finish my 13th Half Marathon today, but, I couldn’t due to temperature and lack of supplies. I stopped my run at 9 miles and made my peace with it.
During the 6th or 7th mile, I realized not to put too much pressure on the knee as a precaution. I was glad with the progress I made in the first two days of the week. Let us see how the rest of the week turns out.

Day 4 – Wednesday, October 21, 2020WFH Day 219
The first two days of hard work made me treat today as the rest day.
I had a busy workday, allowing me to stretch my leg in the evening. Instead of going out for a run, we went for a 3-mile walk in the neighborhood and enjoyed some last bits of Fall colors in Michigan.

Loved walking leisurely through the fallen leaves before those are engulfed by the harsh Michigan winter.

Day 5 – Thursday, October 22, 2020 WFH Day 220
Today was the second rest day of the week. The gloomy weather and work made me stare at my laptop screen for more than 10 hours. It was one of the rare days when we didn’t do any exercise. I think days like this are necessary.

Day 6 – Friday, October 23, 2020 WFH Day 221
Repetition of yesterday. Amidst all the work, I couldn’t go out for run in the afternoon.
The evening was well spent celebrating Monika and Anupam’s 12th wedding anniversary.

Day 7 – Saturday, October 24, 2020 WFH Day 222
The last day of the week and I wanted to make sure we spend it wisely.

Friday night is usually the movie night for us. We watched The one and only Ivan movie, as kids wanted to watch it. This made me go to bed quite late at around 10.30PM, and I woke up at around 6.30AM.
I wanted to make sure I use these couple hours wisely before we eat breakfast, so I headed to NHS for an early morning quick 5K. It was a nice effort, especially because of the cool breeze and low temperature. I could finish it in around 33 minutes, which was an okay-ish effort.

I returned from the run, ate lovely breakfast made by my friends, talked to my folks back home and then headed to NHS again as we wanted to get one more run as the weather was sunny, pleasant, and definitely worth checking out.

During the second run of the day, I made sure I put more efforts into it. Even though I was not going for my PR time for 10K distance, I could finish the 10K run in around 55 minutes, which is 2 minutes slower than my PR time. I was so happy with the effort that I forgot I took 33 minutes a couple hours ago to finish a 5K.
I think it was around mile 4 that I realized I should go for more pace, and was happy I could do it. Awesome day and week.

Though I couldn’t get to 800 miles which was my goal for this week, I am just 3 miles short of it, which I can achieve next week.

Before you go, please do check out the weekly highlight. Excited for the remainder of the year.

Next week’s target: 820 miles.
10 weeks left and roughly 200 miles of running to do.

Book 10 – Why We Sleep – Dr. Matthew Walker

This was the 10th book I read in 2020.

It was the next logical book in my recommendation list after finishing the Grit. When we recently celebrated Rakshabandhan, Monika asked me what gift I would like to have and if you know me, you would know that I *only* love books as gifts, so there we are with Atomic Habits by James Clear.

This book is an extension of what I have read in some of the previous books like Grit, the 5 AM Club, etc. I have been reading a lot of books on self/personality development and life hacks to live a better, stronger, and healthier life & this book definitely helped me with so many messages which are etched into my mind for eternity. Let us see if I can break those down in a few words.

The common theme throughout the book
The book talks about only one thing – why you should sleep at least 8 hours every night, without missing a single night! – Plain & simple.
There is no easy way to explain what this talks about. The author has gone through extreme measures to explain the disastrous effects of sleep loss on a human body & most importantly human brain. The more important thing is that he is not talking out of just presumption, but citing the studies and experiments dating prior to 19th century. In short – the author knows what he is talking about.
For me, personally, this book has been a guiding light for my sleep and wake schedule. I am and will follow whatever guidelines the author has mentioned in this book to lead a happy, healthy, and peaceful life.

Let us begin with the review, shall we?

To go through the learnt lessons from this book, I decided to put my thoughts in a different way – in a (Q)uestion & (A)nswer way. The book is very technical and someone like me who was not aware about the science behind the sleep, it took a lot of time to finish the book and more often than not, I had to reread a few paragraphs just to understand what the author was trying to say.
Having said that, the book is very nicely written and author has given enough examples to explain what actually goes on in your brain.

Let’s start then?

Q – As an adult, how many hours of sleep I need?
A – A minimum of 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

Q – Is it okay if I can’t get 8 hours of sleep every night?
A –
No. You must get at least 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night.

Q – Can I get back the lost sleep? For example – if I slept 7 hours tonight and 9 hours tomorrow night, will that work?
A –
No. You can’t get back the lost sleep. Sleep is not like a credit card balance, which you can pay up with a payment in the future. Once you lose an hour of sleep, that’s it. You lost it. There is no way of getting that 1 hour of lost sleep back.

Q – Why the Guinness Book of World Records has condemned/cancelled the record for the most number of hours being awake (without sleep)?
A –
Because the Guinness Book of World Records knows the devastating effects of sleep loss on a human body. They cancelled/condemned the world record for this to make sure nobody tries for this *unhealthy* and *dangerous* record, which can ultimately lead to someone’s death.

Q – What are the disadvantages of sleep loss?
A –
There are plenty. To name a few – Obesity i.e. weight gain, dementia, headaches, high blood pressure, heart attack, blurry vision, car accidents, and what not.

Q – What are the things I should pay attention to if I want to sleep nicely for at least 8 hours a night?
A –
There are many things that we can pay more attention to improve the 8 hour uninterrupted sleep.
For starters –
1. Make sure the bedroom is cold and not hot. The ideal temperature of the bedroom should be 65F (18-19C).
2. Make sure there are no blue/bright lights in the bedroom when you are trying to sleep. I like to keep my bedroom pitch dark to have an uninterrupted sleep.
3. Make sure there are no visible clocks in your bedroom. This helps you sleep calmly and not think about the day which you have planned ahead. I know it sounds counter intuitive, but this really works for me.
4. Make sure there are no electronic devices in your bedroom. I like to keep my phone outside my bedroom, so that I am not disturbed by things going on in different time zones, as my friends and family are scattered across the globe.
5. Your body temperature helps you fall asleep faster. Due to this reason, you shouldn’t exercise 2 hours prior to your bedtime. If you exercise, your body gets warmed up and your body temperature might stay above the required for you to fall asleep. If needed, a quick shower/bath with hot water is highly recommended. After the hot bath, your body starts to cool down, which ultimately helps you to fall sleep faster.
6. If you are not able to fall asleep faster, try to read a book on you bed. It will help in some way.
7. Don’t drink too much water before the bedtime. This will avoid getting up in the middle of night to urinate.
8. Make sure to eat light dinner before the bedtime. This will ensure you don’t wake up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom.
9. No smoking. No drinking alcohol. This is no brainer.

Q – Is dreaming good? Should we be dreaming while sleeping?
A –
Dreaming is good. If you had a dream (be it good or bad), it is an indication that you had a good night’s sleep.
If you had a good dream – it means your brain is processing the happy thought and you might be smiling (physically) or enjoying (in your dream).
If you had a bad dream a.k.a. a nightmare – it means your brain is processing the sad or unhappy memories from the day or the past. It is a positive thing since you are (in a way) facing your failures, fears, and unhappiness. It is one of the ways of getting over the failures (personal and professional) in the past.

Q – Are sleeping pills good for our sleep?
A –
No. NOT AT ALL. Sleeping pills don’t benefit us with the type of sleep that we need. They give a feeling of fabricated sleep, which doesn’t benefit us in any way.

Q – Is coffee good to stay awake? How many cups and when should we have coffee?
A – I am a coffee connoisseur. This was the biggest takeaway for me from this book. The author mentions that your body needs at least 8 hours to process the caffeine present in coffee; Therefore, you must avoid having coffee after 12PM. I used to have a couple cups of coffees – the first in the morning at around 10AM and the second one at around 3PM. The day I read this in the book, I cut down my second cup of coffee and am surviving only on the single cup of coffee that I take at 10AM. I couldn’t be prouder of myself. 🙂

Q – Is alcohol good for your sleep?
A – No. Alcohol in any way is not good for your sleep. You might think that you fall asleep faster when you consume alcohol, but that’s just a myth.
In the past, I had been a big consumer of alcoholic drinks, which dropped to only a few in a month due to my running and CrossFit, which has dropped down to almost zero now, after reading this book.

Q – What is the takeaway from this book?
A – In fact, there are 12.
Here they are –
1. Fix sleep and wake time.
2. No exercise 2-3 hours before your bedtime.
3. No coffee after 12 PM.
4. No alcohol before bedtime. Best thing – no alcohol at all.
5. No large beverages and food before bedtime.
6. No sleeping pills or medicines that disrupt your sleep.
7. No naps after 3PM.
8. Relax/Meditate before the bedtime.
9. Hot bath before the bed.
10. No lights, No electronic gadgets, Cold temperature in the bedroom.
11. Keep the window shade open, so that you are greeted naturally when you wake up.
12. If you are up, don’t just lie awake in bed, get out of the bed, and get moving.

Conclusion
The author mentioned in the book that if you want to take one piece of advice from this book, it will be – “Fix your sleep time and wake up time“. Fixing this one thing will help you revolutionize the way you live. I will conclude with the same.

It was an awesome book and a highly recommended one if you want to take charge of your life.

See you at the next book review!

WFH – Month 6 (August 18 – September 17)

ARCHIVE
First month (March 17 – April 16)
Second month (April 17 – May 16)
Third month (May 17 – June 17)
Fourth month (June 18 – July 17)
Fifth month (July 18 – August 17)

Well! Well! Well!

Here we are! One more time! Reflecting back on the sixth month of working from home.

This month was overshadowed by Grieving Raja. The sad part was I was 8,000 miles away from home, and there was nothing that I could have done. Losing someone in life puts your life in perspective and you start paying attention to important people and things in your life. This month was about that!

Let’s get started with this month, shall we?

MAJOR HAPPENINGS
600 miles of running
The one celebratory achievement of this month was completing 600 miles of running for the year 2020. I didn’t expect it would happen, as I wasn’t planning on running more than 100 miles. The good part about this achievement was that it came while running one of the Half Marathons. It was a sweet realization when I logged in my run, I was almost caught up by surprise.

Grieved Raja
This was one of the most shocking news for me. A few days before we lost Raja, I remember my Mom showing him to me. Little did I knew that it would be the last time I would see him. It was a hard and harsh reality to face and I took a good week’s time to recover from the shock. The next thing that I am going to talk about helped a lot to grieve Raja.

Camped for the first time
This was something I didn’t think I would be able to do this year. Ever since I came to Michigan in 2017, I always wanted to camp, as Michigan has many hot spots available for camping. Due to COVID19 outbreak, I thought the camp grounds will be available to book. Boy, I was wrong. We were not able to find any nearby campground for a couple weeks and then suddenly a campsite at AuTrain Lake Campground became available and we were quick to book it.
The temperatures were surely chilling and we were lucky that no mishap happened as we were camping for the first time. It was an amazing feeling and something that I would like to relive again and soon (if possible).

Celebrated Mr. Arnav’s birthday
Mr. Arnav turned 7 this September. He got the gifts that he wanted and the kind of cakes and decorations that he wanted. The most important thing for me as his godparent was that he was extremely happy and excited with everything that we had planned for him.
Nothing gave us more pleasure than seeing both of them smiling and happy!

COVID19 POSITIVE CASES IN MICHIGAN
The COVID19 Positive Cases were on the rise throughout the US and Michigan was no exception.

The numbers are skyrocketing as we are speak. Frankly, the precautions and all the social distancing is in place, but it doesn’t seem to work that effectively. The only way to get out of this mess is to have the working vaccine; Because, I am not sure if the humans will go back to the strict lockdowns and taking enough precautions.

Fingers crossed!

RUNNING
Talking about running, two things come to my mind.

What an awesome month for running. During these 30 days, I could run for 108 miles. This number is the proof of developing habits through small goals. When I started running, I didn’t plan for running 100 miles a month, but as the running habit was developed, the distance increased on its own – resulting in running more than 100 miles for the fifth month of working from home.

Like last month, I ran 3 Half Marathons during this month. Running a Half Marathon has been a quite frequent affair now and I don’t seem to get enough of it. I have already achieved the yearly goal of running 12 Half Marathons, so let’s see what number I stop at by December 31st, 2020.

BIKING
Biking has been neglected a little bit and I could finish 74 miles of biking. With the temperatures dropping down, I am sure I would bike less and try to run more.

HIKING
Hiking was no exception. I could hike only for only 21 miles. I am not happy with it, but can live with this number. Let’s see how the next month looks like.

Till then, take care & stay safe!

May 19, 2017 – Long Island, NY, USA

During this point in my life, I was just chilling with my friends, in between semesters at UConn. I was done with Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 semesters. I wasn’t intending for any internship, so I was just waiting for Summer 2017 to commence and finish, so that I can be done with my MSBAPM degree and head to the next stage in my life. Simple plan!

The month of May happened to fall between Spring 2017 and Summer 2017, so the only thing that I could do was to chill with Nidhi and other UConn buddies, as Shlok left Connecticut a few days ago. That’s when Nidhi & I decided to visit our friends, Udit and Randip, who were living in Long Island during this point.

As none of us knew how to drive, we took a bus from Hartford to NYC. From NYC, we took a subway to reach my friends’ place. It was a nice feeling to spend a few days out on the road, with friends like family, and let loose a little bit.
When you prepare to come to the US for studies, they don’t tell you about how stressful it can get if you don’t land a job in time. Though I was in no hurry to land a job, still the thought of being a graduate student and still not have landed a job haunted me, so I knew I needed to take it seriously.
But, there was definitely some time to let loose and have some fun, so I nodded yes to Nidhi when she suggested to visit Udit & Randip during one of the weekends. I was excited to these trips and having known both of them for some time now, knew that I would definitely have a good time, to recharge my batteries.

For this evening, we decided to explore the Long Island Downtown. Our definition of exploring a Downtown area has evolved over time. When we were driving through the streets of Downtown, we found it hard to get a parking spot in the area. As it was a Friday evening, everyone were out for obvious reasons, so after spending almost 10 minutes, we finally found a spot which was decently close to the Downtown area. It gave us both peace of mind and relief to finally carry on with the Friday night feelings.

The area was full of people, like every Downtown area is. The crowd here, though, was somewhat different. There were so many people that we had to line up outside every restaurant and pub that we wanted to go in. Though I loved going to these places, the constant lines and wait was a little annoying. That’s when I was missing pubs in Hartford, where I didn’t need to stand in line and used to have some fun as well.

We were exploring different pubs to “feel the vibes”. The atmosphere was great. The energy was on par and the people were awesome.
I made sure I annoy Nidhi a little bit amid all the “bar hopping” scenes just like Shlok used to, to soothe her and cheer her up. Sometimes it used to work, sometimes I used to fall flat, but, I used to have fun!

After drinking I don’t know how many beers, we finally had some food and it was around midnight when we headed home. It was during this time, I developed my love for Chicken Wings. Having explored key places in the West Coast, my go to food used to be Chicken Wings and beer. I used to savor every moment of it, and trust me, I am salivating just writing about it! GOOD OLD DAYS!!!

May 16, 2017 – UConn Farewell, Hartford, CT, USA

What an evening!

For starters, to avoid any confusion, this was not a farewell for me or for anyone. A little backstory might help, so here it goes.

One of our professors at UConn, Dr. Ram Gopal, was kind enough to offer us an extra set of lectures on Statistics when the rest of our UConn buddies were busy with their internships and were not available for in-person classes at UConn’s Hartford campus. I didn’t apply for internship as I wanted to graduate earlier than normal batch and start working and earning to support my family. I know it was a risk, but it was a calculated risk and didn’t seem a bad decision to me.

Anyway, this evening was a culmination of all the extra classes that we were attending. I am not sure what we learned during the last class, but at the end of the class, he invited every one of us (roughly 20 students) to join him at the brewery where he invited us the last time – Citysteam brewery. We were jubilant to join him and spend more time with him discussing about various things and the future prospects once we graduate from UConn.

As we were only 10-12 people, we got a table easily and that’s when we started chugging some beer and talking whatever was in our mind (& by we, I meant me). By this time, I was a little “pro” when it came to drinks now, so when the professor asked around what we would like to have, I went ahead and told a pitcher of dirty blonde would be nice. Along with the dirty blonde, the professor ordered one more pitcher of some other beer, which I don’t remember now.

We started chugging glasses of beer and there were a couple of us who were not into beer, so the professor made sure they order a drink of their choice. Everyone started talking to each other and professor and started sharing their stories, their plans after the graduation and what not.
This is where I wanted to seize the opportunity to have some “future” discussion with the professor. I mentioned my ambition of pursuing a Ph.D. degree, to which the professor was nothing but supportive. Having mentioned my desire to pursue highest level of education, I made sure to mention that I do have a family to support and three sisters to marry off. Having come from the similar background, the professor grew a little serious in his tone and mentioned that if I could commit 5 years of my time to him at Hartford, it would be easier for me to purse a part-time Ph.D. degree at UConn itself.

That’s when I realized that the idea of part-time Ph.D. degree never crossed my mind. This short five minute discussion was something I needed really bad to figure out a way to realize my ultimate dream – “having a Dr. before my name”.
The reason I came to the US was to unlock the better life and better opportunities. Ever since I knew how the education system of this world works, I knew I would like to get a Ph.D. degree and then call it a day (as far as my formal education is concerned).
I was glad that I got this chance to talk to the professor and sought his advice about my plan for higher education. Ever since that day, this discussion has been with me and I go back to this day whenever I feel like taking that next step in my life.

Anyway, as the evening progressed, we drank more and I was feeling a little dizzy with the effect of a few glasses of beer. I was enjoying and my fellow batchmates were enjoying me talking to them. That’s when we clicked so many photos with everyone, thinking that this might be the last time we see each other, which was true, sadly!

At the end of the evening, we hugged the professor and each other and bade goodbyes. On the way to my apartment, I picked a subway sandwich as I was not in mood to cook dinner. It was enough to call it a night.

Memorable day and good people!

Next stop – exploring New York state, Long Island in particular.

Week 41 (October 11 – October 17) – Running 1,000 miles in 2020

What an amazing week 40 I had. Let us see what’s in store for week number 41. The goal for this week is 773 miles. Will I get it? Let us find out.

Day 1 – Sunday, October 11, 2020 – WFH Day 209
The first day of the week and I couldn’t have started it on a high note.

I got up quite late as we watched a late-night Bollywood movie on Netflix called Badla. If you don’t know, I am not a big fan of watching TV, but I watched the movie with my friends Monika and Anupam as the trailer looked promising. The movie turned out extremely brilliant and very well written, with impressive acting from both the leading actors. As it was well past 11.30PM, I couldn’t go to bed and had to spend some more time on Netflix, watching a documentary called American Murder. As I was well aware of this gruesome murder, I didn’t mind watching it and finally went to bed at around 1.30AM.

Going late to bed made me get up at around 9-9.30AM, which is extremely rare occasion for me. Getting up late transpired to going out quite late to explore some Michigan Fall colors at our nearby favorite spot – Hines Drive. After enjoying the Fall colors and getting drenched with the differently colored leaves by the kids, it was time to head to NHS for a quick run before heading into the work week.

I was glad that Anupam gave me company during the run. We decided to go for a 10K distance and were looking to finish it under an hour.
The run started normally, I gently started pacing myself, but at the same time, I made sure that I don’t run out of breath. After the 3rd and 4th mile, I don’t know what gotten into me, I just started picking up pace. I had never experienced such an agile moment before and decided to not stop until I finish the 10K distance. I was running so smoothly and effortlessly that I could finish the last couple miles at 8’ and 7’30” pace respectively. I had never felt such an awesomeness after a 10K run and I was right, it was my PR for a 10K distance. I couldn’t be happier!

Day 2 – Monday, October 12, 2020 WFH Day 210
The work week started off on the right track.

This week, the weather is not great, so I don’t have many expectations as far as my running achievements go. Having said that, at around 4PM, the weather seemed perfect to go out for a quick 5K before the predicted rain. Mr. Aryan offered to bike when I was running, which I couldn’t refuse. The run was fun and as he was biking, I had to pick up a pace here and there. We ran/biked in the neighborhood and was glad to finish the run before the rain gods arrived.
I felt a little pain in my right knee. I have felt it before, so I wouldn’t be surprised if I wake up tomorrow with a sore knee. Let’s see!

Day 3 – Tuesday, October 13, 2020WFH Day 211
When I woke up in the morning, my right knee didn’t feel my usual best, so thought I wouldn’t be able to run today.
By the time afternoon rolled in, the knee felt better and I was looking forward to the evening time to go out for run. Fortunately, my knee didn’t trouble me much and I enjoyed an hour of running at NHS.

The weather was extremely good to go out for a quick run and I was planning for a 5K but ended up completing a 10K distance without any stop for water or food. The important thing that I paid attention to was my pace and heartbeat. I made sure I don’t put more pressure on my knee and keep the pace just around 10, making sure the heartbeat doesn’t go beyond 170BPM. It turned out pretty well for me, as I could finish 10K distance in almost an hour, without too much pressure and sweating profusely.

This run brought me closer to the weekly target and I cannot wait for the next few days.

Day 4 – Wednesday, October 14, 2020WFH Day 212
The first rest day of the week and I had to skip running today to avoid further injury to my already hurt right knee.
The rest was important and necessary. The evening was beautiful with cold and fall Michigan weather. Enjoyed the walk on Hines Drive.
Let’s see how the rest of the week turns out.

Day 5 – Thursday, October 15, 2020 WFH Day 213
My right knee is really in pain, so I had to skip running two days in a row. I didn’t imagine running almost 40 miles a week (last week) would put this much pressure on my knee. So, I have learnt my lesson and taking some precautions.

Day 6 – Friday, October 16, 2020 WFH Day 214
The third rest day in a row. The knee is getting better, but to avoid further injury, taking extra precautions and not running at all for the remainder of the week.
This means, I won’t be able to meet the weekly target, but I am sure, I can coup up the losses next week.

Friday meant the last day of the workweek, so we checked out the Maybury State Park, which is a minute’s drive from our community. Surprisingly, the park has so many more things to offer, that we couldn’t explore in the past. We underestimated the fall colors that Maybury had to offer. Definitely worth checking out the pictures.

Day 7 – Saturday, October 17, 2020 WFH Day 215
The last day of the week and it was my fourth rest day in a row.
Nothing to complain, grateful and happy (as always) to be surrounded by the lovely people.

We decided to visit the Blue Water River Walk in Port Huron. When I saw the waters for the first time, I overlooked the fact why it was called Blue Water. That was “Duh” moment for me, when I realized that the water was blue in color. Isn’t it blue in color everywhere? May be, it was my silliness to overlook this basic fact.

Anyway, we walked and explored all places that this place had to offer. Accompanying us was the beautiful Michigan weather and life couldn’t be better. Post walk, we had a few slices of pizza and called it a Saturday. You can see the beauty of this place in the pictures below.

Before you go, please check out the weekly highlights.

Only 11 more weeks to go, and I still have 230 more miles to go for 1,000 miles for the year. Will I get it? I will try! 🙂

May 07, 2017 – An End of an Era, Hartford, CT, USA

Well, to start things off with this post, Shlok did leave Hartford, for good!

He graduated a couple days ago, we celebrated a day after his graduation, so it was fitting that he would fly to his next destination, which was Bay Area in search of his next adventure. It was too soon to be true, but it was happening and we were happy for him.

But, before that, let us back up to a night before his departure.

This night, it was all about celebrating the hard work and sacrifices that Shlok and Nidhi made for the last couple of years, let loose a little bit, and have fun. That’s all!

To celebrate their graduation, we decided to head to West Hartford Downtown and we had been here on numerous occasion for dinners and stuff. It was a perfect location to let loose, especially because it was away from Hartford Downtown and not a lot of familiar faces around. This place was filled with so many pubs, bars, restaurants, and things to check out.
To celebrate today’s evening, we decided to head to World of Beer. It was the first time I was going to head to WoB and as the name indicated, was hoping to taste some delicious beer here. Back then, I was a newbie back then, so (as always) was relying on my friends to recommend me something that I would like, as they knew my taste buds.

As we took our seats and settled in, everyone started ordering stuff. I, on the other hand, was still contemplating about what to order. That’s when one of our UConn seniors passed by and recommended trying Hefeweizen. First of all, I was hearing that name for the first time, so I had to make sure I am hearing the word right. After I got the word right, I googled what it was and what to expect if I went ahead with the order, and frankly, not to make a fool of myself.

I took his suggestion and order a tall glass of Hefeweizen for myself. When I took that first sip, I didn’t realize how good and tasty the drink was. I was overjoyed to finally found the beer which I found to be suitable for my taste. If you know me, you would know that I am a very choosy person, and I take my time to “like” something, so it was evident that I immediately liked the taste of Hefeweizen and gulped the entire glass within no time.
I order a plateful of chicken wings along with a couple of beers for the evening.

Our seats were in a perfect spot. We were surrounded by so many UConn students i.e. huskies that I got to meet almost everyone from my seniors’ batch. I made small talks with many of them and clinking my drinks with them.
The evening was filled with talking about many things, almost everything of which I am not able to recollect right now, but, we made sure to let Shlok know that we were not happy with him leaving this early and made him feel bad about it (but in a good sport)!

We made it home in the wee hours of the night and before I knew it, fell asleep!

So many memories made in the last couple of months, so many more things and places to explore! Stay tuned!

May 06, 2017 – UConn Graduation Ceremony (not mine), Hartford, CT, USA

What an awesome day! This day was more special because we spent the last evening at Nidhi’s place, rejuvenating all memories of UConn days.
The excitement to this day multifolded when a couple of our UConn seniors joined us to celebrate Nidhi and Shlok’s graduation day. It feels funny to call them seniors, they were more like friends to us and family away from family.

The day started off with us getting ready to head to UConn’s Storrs campus, where the graduation ceremony was scheduled to take place. Shlok and Nidhi headed before us as they had to take care of the formalities, since they were the ones graduating.
I was accompanied by my friends, Pravin, Udit, and Randip. I was waiting for them downstairs my apartment and the journey to Storrs began when they picked me up.

As soon as we reached the UConn Storrs campus, I am sure Udit and Randip might have gotten some refreshing memories as it had been no more than a year for them graduating the same institute. After we parked our car, it was time to click countless pictures before heading inside the Gampel Pavilion where most of the UConn indoor games are played and that’s where the graduation ceremony was held.

It was hard for us to get a good seat to ease our lives clicking photos of the ceremony. We had to call Nidhi to make sure we see her as the ceremony time was getting closer. Once we located her and Shlok, it was time to sit back, relax, click pictures, and have fun, basically!

When they announced that the UConn MBA graduates are next in line, we all stood in our seats as we didn’t want to miss a single moment.
It was Shlok who was called before Nidhi for the graduation ceremony. I am sure he must have felt proud and happy at the same moment to get recognition for the hard work that he put in for the last couple of years. I was wondering how I would feel when I will graduate and be a part of the ceremony next year. It gave me goosebumps.

After a few minutes, it was Nidhi’s turn and we were screaming her name so that she could see us and pose for a picture. The thing is, there are thousands of people in the pavilion and it becomes a little hard for anyone to hear the person next to them, but, still, Nidhi could hear us and posed for a quick picture. She was looking radiant and visibly happy, working for the last couple of years for this day. It must have been an amazing feeling for her.

The graduation ceremony was soon over for the rest of their classmates and everyone started gathering outside the pavilion to pose for the last few pictures and create memories and spend some time with their loved ones. Everyone gathered outside the School of Business building and then started the next wave of graduation pictures. I also clicked many pictures and sort of became a part of their celebration.

Once we exhausted all the energy to take picture, we were hungry and wanted to eat something & what was a better place than the pizza place in the campus itself. We devoured the pizza in no time and headed home to doze some steam off, as it had been a long day already.

Truly a memorable day, especially for Nidhi and Shlok!

Next stop – post graduation bar hopping and my accidental meet with the tastiest beer I ever had!
