Week 05 (January 29 – February 04) – MJ’s Running in 2023

Welcome to the fifth week of running of 2023.

Life is an ever-evolving journey, filled with twists, turns, and unexpected detours. As runners, we often find solace and routine in our weekly miles, but there are moments when life takes precedence over our usual activities. Week 05 of my running journey (January 29 – February 04) was one such chapter. As my new wife embarked on her second master’s degree at Lamar University and we settled into our new life in the US, the rhythm of our days was redefined by the excitement of new beginnings.

In a world that encourages us to constantly keep moving, it’s important to recognize when it’s necessary to hit the pause button. This week, my running shoes remained neatly tucked away as the tasks of adjusting to a new country, a new home, and new academic pursuits took center stage. While the trails and tracks waited patiently, my focus shifted to creating a foundation for our life in this foreign land.

Change can be both exhilarating and overwhelming, a blend of anticipation and uncertainty. My wife’s pursuit of her second master’s degree at Lamar University symbolized a new chapter in our lives. As she delved into the world of academia, attending classes and immersing herself in assignments, our routines transformed. The bustling energy of college life filled our days, replacing the familiar rhythm of running with the excitement of education.

Just as every run presents an opportunity to explore new routes, this phase of our journey offered a chance to explore new paths of growth and discovery. While I may have missed my usual runs during Week 05, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and excitement as I watched my wife embrace her studies with determination. Her pursuit of knowledge mirrored the spirit of exploration that drives runners to conquer new distances.

Every break, whether from running or any other routine, offers its own set of lessons. Week 05 taught me the value of adaptability, of embracing change without resistance. It reminded me that while running is a constant source of joy and challenge, there are moments when other priorities shine brighter. Just as we don’t shy away from difficult runs, we shouldn’t shy away from the demands of life’s important moments.

As Week 05 drew to a close, a sense of accomplishment and contentment settled in. While the miles may not have been logged, the steps taken in settling into a new life were just as significant. The beauty of a running journey lies in its continuity, and I’m eager to lace up my shoes and hit the pavement when the time is right.

In the grand tapestry of life, Week 05 was a chapter of transition, of embracing new roles and responsibilities. Running will always be there, waiting to welcome me back with open arms when the time is right. Until then, I’ll continue to celebrate the miles run and the miles not run, as both contribute to the vibrant mosaic of experiences that make up a fulfilling life.

See you next week!
