Week 43 (October 16 – October 22) – MJ’s Running in 2022

Welcome to the forty third week of running for the year 2022.

In the crisp morning air of October 2022, I embarked on a remarkable journey, one that would test my endurance, challenge my limits, and provide me with an experience like no other. The Detroit FreePress International Marathon awaited me, offering the opportunity to cross the border on foot between the United States and Canada. As I laced up my running shoes, anticipation coursed through my veins, knowing that this marathon would be unlike any I had ever taken on before.

As the starting gun fired, a wave of excitement engulfed the sea of runners. We set off from the vibrant city of Detroit, Michigan, and quickly made our way towards the Ambassador Bridge, our gateway to Canada. The sight of the expansive bridge stretched out before me was awe-inspiring. The realization that I would soon be crossing an international border on foot was a surreal moment that filled me with a profound sense of adventure.

As I ascended the bridge, the panoramic views of both countries unfolded before my eyes. The mighty Detroit River flowed beneath me, acting as a symbolic connection between two nations. The cheering spectators on both sides of the border added to the electric atmosphere, encouraging us every step of the way. It was a moment of unity and camaraderie, as runners from all walks of life joined together in pursuit of a common goal.

The Detroit FreePress International Marathon was only the third time I had ever attempted a distance exceeding 26 miles. It was a bold endeavor, pushing me beyond my comfort zone and challenging me mentally and physically. I knew that I would need to dig deep, summoning every ounce of determination and resilience within me to conquer this demanding course. As the miles ticked by, I found myself in a rhythm, my mind focused and my body driven by an unwavering determination to finish what I had started. The course took us through scenic neighborhoods, bustling city streets, and sprawling parks, providing a tapestry of landscapes that kept me engaged and motivated.

After six hours of relentless effort, I finally crossed the finish line. A surge of exhilaration washed over me, mingled with a profound sense of accomplishment. Completing the Detroit FreePress International Marathon had been no small feat, and the knowledge that I had not only conquered a marathon but also traversed an international boundary on foot filled me with a deep sense of pride.

Reflecting on the journey, I realized that running is more than just a physical activity. It is a testament to the human spirit’s indomitable nature and the power of setting and achieving ambitious goals. The Detroit FreePress International Marathon taught me the importance of perseverance, resilience, and embracing new challenges. It reinforced the notion that stepping outside our comfort zones is where true growth and transformation occur.

My experience at the Detroit FreePress International Marathon will forever hold a special place in my heart. Crossing the border on foot between the United States and Canada, pushing my limits, and completing a marathon in just six hours were accomplishments that far surpassed my expectations. This remarkable journey taught me that with dedication, determination, and a willingness to step into the unknown, we can achieve greatness.

As I look back on that unforgettable day, I am reminded that life is a series of borders to be crossed and limits to be pushed. The Detroit FreePress International Marathon served as a poignant reminder that anything is possible when we set our minds to it. It has inspired me to continue seeking out new adventures, conquering new challenges, and embracing the surreal experiences that await on the other side of our comfort zones.

To summarize my weekly running efforts, I ran 26.5 miles with 13’53” pace, completing 369.6 miles for the year.

See you next week!
