Visiting West Coast has always been a special affair for me and this one was no different.
The flights from Detroit to West Coast are costly, except for Vegas. For this trip, I was going to visit the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, so nothing seemed to be a better destination than Las Vegas. The flight tickets were cheap and I got the rental car for a good deal, so it turned out to be a nice package for me.
When I took a flight from Detroit, it was still cloudy, snowing, and raining in Michigan. When my plane landed in Las Vegas, I could see the bright sun waiting to welcome me in the West Coast. I felt so relieved to be away from the snow for just a weekend and was looking forward to one of the most astounding and grand things a person can witness in his/her lifetime – Grand Canyon.
Before this trip, I had just read about Grand Canyon. If I would have read or researched just a little more about the place, I could have enjoyed it more. Nevertheless, I was just enjoying the fact that I was driving in the different part of the country and enjoying the beautiful sunny weather on my tank top and shorts and flip flops.
After landing in Vegas, the first thing I did was to rent a car and drove in the direction of our hotel. I had booked a hotel in Flagstaff, AZ which was midway between Vegas and Grand Canyon. When I was driving from Vegas to Flagstaff, I didn’t know and anticipate that we would have to spend almost couple of hours in the traffic. The freeway between Vegas and Flagstaff has only a single lane and we were stuck at same spot for more than couple hours because of the major accident ahead of us, at least a mile away. You can imagine the pile up it must have caused because of the accident. Instead of bitching about it, I decided to pull down both the windows of the car and take a nap. I had taken a red eye flight from Detroit to Vegas, so it gave a good opportunity to catch up on my sleep. I must tell you, the traffic didn’t seem long when I took a nap. I think I had to wait for 20-30 minutes more after waking up from my nap. I used that time to get out of the car and walk and stretch my legs a little bit. I hadn’t walked on the American Freeway before, so it was definitely good moment, which I still remember.
We made it to Flagstaff, AZ and got a nice shower. As it had already been dark and we were hungry, we decided to head to nearest Pizza joint and have a few slices of my favorite food. The town of Flagstaff turned out to be a nice one as I could see some nice souvenir stores and a few places for families to hang out. Anyway, the night was upon us and I needed some sleep as we had Grand Canyon ahead of us for the rest of the day tomorrow.
Next stop: Grand Canyon, AZ, USA.
